Be Wary of those Pre-approved Credit Cards

These pre-approved credit cards are nothing more than promotional mailings. Due to the earnest desire to increase their client base, credit card issuers send out these notices to individuals, who they feel are qualified to be holders of the particular credit card they carry. But as the term literally implies, these are “pre-approved” based on initial screening. They are not yet approved.

How did they get your name and personal information? It could have been from a data base provided by a marketing outfit. And pre-qualification may have been coursed through one of the three credit bureaus. So this means that you have met their general requirements to be granted their credit card. But this is still subject to further evaluation.

Although admittedly, you have a bigger chance of being approved having passed the initial screening, the “pre-approved” stamp does not guarantee an approval. But wait; do you need a credit card (or another credit card) to start with? One of the objectives of this pre-approved credit card notice is to entice you to apply for a credit card from their company, regardless of whether you require one or not. Assuming that you are really qualified and that your application will be approved, the question remains – do you really need it? Only you can properly evaluate your financial needs. And you should imbibe the discipline to turn down the offer if in fact you feel that a credit card (or another credit card) is not necessary.

Assuming that you do apply and are eventually declined, this may have a negative impact on your credit rating. The different credit bureaus will definitely access this derogative information, and this may weigh down on your credit score.

So proceed with caution in dealing with these pre-approved credit card notices. Before you pursue your application for a supposed pre-approved card, make sure that it will be to your financial benefit. If you still do not have a credit card, acquiring one will definitely add to your purchasing convenience. Just make sure that you manage your finances properly. Now if you already have a card, having another one may be to your advantage if your purpose is to transfer your obligations to a credit card account having lower interest. Again, just make sure that your actions will improve your financial well-being. And before you do anything, make sure that the company you’re dealing with is reputable.
